Maintaining Your Swimming Pool In The Off-Season

Posted on: 15 April 2015

Every year when the off-season for swimming (fall and winter) comes along, you need to shut down your pool and stop using it so that it doesn't get dirty and gross for the months that no one goes into it. However, that doesn't mean that you won't still need to perform maintenance on the swimming pool to keep it in good working order when the warm weather comes again. Here are a few of the ways that you should maintain your swimming pool during the off-season so that you don't have any problems when you attempt to start it up again:

Balance the Water Chemistry

Balancing your pool's water chemistry for the winter is important, because you don't want the pool to get iced over and have a hard time thawing out when you go to use it again. In order to make sure that the water chemistry is perfectly balanced, you first need to check the PH levels, shock the pool, and add winter time algaecide to it so that no algae builds up over the winter. All of this except for the last part is a normal, routine part of pool maintenance anyway, so that should be fairly simple for you to do.

Leave the Pumps and Motors On

You may think that turning off all of the moving components of your pool is a good idea, but in reality, that can cause problems when you try to turn the pool back on after several months of inactivity. Pumps and motors can lock up or freeze over the winter, and as a result, they may not function properly in the summer. Therefore, it's a good idea to just leave these on and running as they are designed to continuously power the pool anyway. Even though you won't be using the pool, it still needs to keep its internal gears working much like a car does.

Cover the Pool

It should go without saying, but perhaps one of the most important things you can do to maintain your swimming pool during the fall and winter is to cover it up with a pool cover. There are many different kinds of pool covers on the market, so you just have to find the one that will work best for you. Once you find your ideal cover, install it on the pool and keep it in place until the weather warms up. This will keep debris, bugs, and more out of the pool and will also help keep the water from freezing. Therefore, you have less of a mess and hassle to deal with in the warmer months.

These are just the basics for off-season swimming pool maintenance, but they are extremely important. If you want to keep on using your swimming pool for many years to come, then it is important that you or a company like Shawnee Pools take care of it all year long, even when you aren't using it.
